Today we visited the Te Papa museum in Wellington. Te Papa means our place which is appropriate because the museum offers 5 floors of New Zealand history. The museum features some stunning and interactive exhibits such as, the earthquake simulator, the exhibit about native New Zealand birds, and the Mare. The museum is free for all to visit. I noticed that on their first floor they seek to educate people about endangered aviary species. There was an exhibit that stood out to me where you could hear the bird calls of New Zealand birds. However, some of the birds did not have recorded calls because they had gone extinct.
The museum also seeks to educate its visitors about the invasive species of New Zealand. Many of the mammals were not brought over with the intention of overtaking the native flora and fauna but in the end that was what happened. New Zealand still struggles with invasive species and the way that affect the aviary population. Raising awareness will hopefully help in the conservation of these unique species.
