Today we left early to catch a ferry to Waiheke Island. We started our time on the island by planting Manuka trees on land that is being restored. The land is undergoing a restoration project to transition from farmland to a space with lush native plants. Next we stopped at Mud Brick vineyards where we learned about the wine making process and steps the vineyard is taking to become more sustainable. I did not realize how different weather conditions during the growing season can affect which types of wines the vineyard is able to produce for that year. Overall, I thought it was super interesting and I am curious now of how climate change will affect the wine industry.
