Today we got to visit a very successful sustainability organization that has many sustainability-based projects, but mostly framed around zero waste. Creating a circular economy where waste is looked at as. a crucial part of preserving our earth is something I have become very interested in over this last semester. It was great to get a deep dive into information describing the opportunities and challenges that the trust experience in this field. They have many important initiatives and projects that sound at a small scale right now, but if they could somehow scale up everything, I could see this trust being a major contributor to changing the status quo and shifting our society towards zero waste. Waste is a topic that I feel is often overlooked as it is so hard for people to stop consuming products that are so wasteful, as well as being comfortable with tossing things into the land fill. I believe the problem is that we are so disconnected from our waste as often we through it in the trash and never see it again. If we began to localize landfills, I think people would see how wasteful our society is and that it is an urgent issue that needs to be properly addressed.
