Today, we started our morning by meeting with the director of corporate sustainability for Sky City. Sky City takes multiple approaches to sustainability such as focusing on 5 sustainability pillars. These 5 sustainability pillars include sky cities customers, the community, their employees, suppliers, and the environment. Their 5 pillars of sustainability allow for the company to maintain corporate responsibility in a way that is holistic. Corporate environmental responsibility is essential for ensuring that corporations are held responsible for any environmental harm that their business may cause and to create a proactive plan to mitigate these environmental harms.
After we left Sky City, Alex, Connor, Eric, and I hiked to the top of Mount Eden. The hike is short but goes up the steep side of the volcano. At the top of the volcano, there is a huge crater that 160 feet deep. Mount Eden is also known as Maungawhau in Maori which means “mountain of the whau tree”. Maungawahu has great cultural and spiritual significance to Maori peoples, due to Mataaho (a deity) which was once said to live in the crater and is believed to be the guardian of secrets deep in the Earth. After the hike, we visited Eden Garden. The garden had a waterfall, numerous blooming trees, and free range chickens.
