Today we went to Sanford Fishing Company and learned about how they are approaching commercial fishing from a sustainable standpoint and how they are ever changing and evolving their fishing techniques to combat new challenges. One way I thought that was very interesting was using farming techniques for fishing and aquaculture of salmon and mussels. They use theses techniques to create a more sustainable environment with still great quality. Other improvements include improved net efficiency, scientific research on fishing practices, and aging fish so they are not prematurely captured. Many improvements still need to be made such as the use of single use plastics in consumer containers and more energy efficient vessels.
