Sanford Fishing has a rich history in New Zealand. The company is leading in sustainability out of all of New Zealand’s fishing industry. We got to look over one of Sanford’s factories where some employees were trimming fish and prepping them for customers. One interesting thing that I learned was that the company doesn’t have a water recycling system. At first, this was confusing to me, as a Californian, because of how scarce water is in our state but after contextualizing and realizing that New Zealand gets plenty of water, not having that kind of concern and system in place made a lot of sense. I was impressed to see a company that put so much value in listening to scientists and their expertise. When it really comes down to it, I hope that people and corporations can realize that being sustainable will only serve to benefit them (as a company) in the long run as well as the planet and all things living off of it.
