Today we learned about sustainability trust. I was surprised by all the different things they do to support the community with sustainability. I was surprised to learn about the curtain recycling project they have where old curtains are dropped off and Either reused for low-income households or fixed and renewed. It was interesting to learn about how each part of the sustainability trust is thou holy thought out from the energy company aspect to trash auditing, curtain recycling and electronic recycling, and even sustainable house heating. It caught me off guard initially when I learned how the energy system works in New Zealand. Initially, I had believed that the energy system was like the US where the energy company is determined by region. This is not the case. In fact, Energy producers sell to energy companies that bundle or sell energy to retail energy sellers. This means that there is more market opportunity, and as a nonprofit Trust, the sustainability trust is able to create cheap affordable energy and subsidize the cost of energy for low-income households. I believe this is an amazing Idea that I think the US could benefit A lot from. Overall this was a really cool experience learning about the sustainability trust and I would love to learn more about organizations similar to this back home in the US.
