Today we met with the sustainability manager at the Sustainability Trust in Wellington. They have many different projects that not only meet some of the sustainability development goals but also support people in Wellington with housing needs. Their curtain bank projects encourages citizens and big companies to donate their curtains when they feel that they’ve reached the “end” of their lifetime. This stops the curtains from ending up landfill and gives them a second life. The sustainability trust has 30 regular volunteers that go in and asses and mend the curtains as needed. The curtains are then given to families that need the curtains to keep the warmth in their homes. This important, especially in a city where it can get very cold and the cost of heat can be very high. The curtains also provide a sense of privacy which can be difficult to obtain in public housing.
