Today I learned a lot at the new Zealand city center for sustainable cities. We took a tour around the city and saw the urban planning in action. I also really enjoyed the research that was done by one of the grad students. She did research on urban communities and how they were impacted due to the covid-19 virus. This was interesting seeing her findings as she showed what these communities were lacking. We then went on to learn about the public housing and urban regeneration program. They are more than 2.5 years into a a five year government funded MBIE research. They are studying to explore public housing providers, as-well as approaches to housing and regeneration projects. It was cool to see how invested they were into the local communities and how everyone was striving to make the situation better. We learned about some of the challenges that New Zealand’s faces such as rising land and house costs, pressure on infrastructure, declining ability to develop land and the need of a significant reduce in carbon emissions. They are currently at about 10 tone per head on CO2 emissions their goal is to get down to just two. They have a long way to go however they are pursuing this sustainability and exploring new ways to become more sustainable. Overall today I learned a-lot about new Zealand their goals, and their struggles.
