Today we got to speak with members of Tourism Industry Aotearoa. The most unique aspect of this business was their focus on regenerative tourism. This is one step up from sustainable tourism. This means that their goals are not only to ensure that tourism is not harming the planet, but also ensure that New Zealand itself is benefiting from it. This is a great concept because many probably don’t think of tourism as helping the environment. It certainly brings in money for the economy, but it could do so much more. For example, tourists at the zoo will be giving their money towards conservation and protection of endangered wildlife. They will also feel more inclined to care about saving endangered species after seeing them in person. This is just one example of how the tourism industry can be rethought farther than monetary gain to benefit the natural world!
