Today was amazing! We got to see amazing natural resources at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, like Frying Pan Lake, Inferno Crater, Cathedral Rocks, and more. It was so neat to see the lakes steaming hot from the ground and bubbling with Carbon Dioxide. Learning about the prospects of geothermal energy was also interesting. Our guide taught us a bit about this renewable energy from our own home: California. He explained how Mammoth Mountain used hot lake water to generate power, which was going great until the lake dried up. However, this does not mean that the energy can no longer be harvested! People began filling the naturally heated lakebed with grey water from the city, and then instead of the water itself they began using the steam to create energy. This is a prime example of how challenging the norm can lead to great strides in sustainability.
I was also pleased to know that although Waimangu Valley does not generate energy in this way, they take measurements of these resources to be used as a guide for other geothermal sites around the world

Then we were so lucky to be able to experience an evening with the Maori people. They are such a happy and welcoming group. We got to play some of their games, learn about traditional tattoos and medicines, and try their food. We learned first hand the values of this tribe and got to take part in activities that have been forgotten by the modern world. There is so much knowledge to be gained, and squandering it has no place in today’s society. The Maori have remained strong through any struggle they face, and they acknowledge both the triumphs of the reinvigorated interest in their language along with the push for more equitable practices. This is an experience I will treasure for a lifetime! Thank you to the gracious people who hosted us and Kia Ora!
