There was a lot to learn about sustainability through Sanford Fishing! Interestingly, I thought one of the most important topics we discussed was the packaging around the fish products. It is very easy to demonize all single use plastics and point fingers at companies that use them, but our speaker pointed out that until there is a better solution, sometimes this is the only option to keep food products safe. That is why it is so important not only to educate people on environmental science so they will be motivated to take action to help The Earth, but also to understand the underlying biology and chemistry of materials and work towards creating products that are both sustainable and practical. We have to remember that change occurs incrementally, so while it would be nice to do away with all single use plastics right now, it would be more wise to step back and approach this issue scientifically and correctly before making rash decisions that are uninformed or incomplete. As a maori would tackle this issue, they would look 50 to 100 years into the future to understand the big picture of radical change, and we would be best to listen to this wisdom.
All that talk about fish made us hungry, so we grabbed some New Zealand green lipped mussels at a little shop nearby. Also earlier in the day I went to see Mount Eden Boardwalk, which was beautiful! Then finished off with a CrossFit workout and got to meet some locals.
