Day 3: Sanford Fishing Co.

Today we learned about sustainable fishing at Sanford Fishing. The only thing I really knew about fishing was how unethical it is most of the time, so it was interesting to hear their strategies and what they do to make sure their fishing is not doing harm to people, or the environment. One thing they are working on is reducing accidental by-catch by coming up with different methods such as the SLED. This allows sea lions to escape in case they get caught in one of their nets. Another thing they are working on is working with other organizations to protect endangered species such as the Maui Dolphin. Sanford Fishing is really paving the way for other sustainable fishing companies all over the world and it was cool to see the work that goes into that.
