Today we visited Sanford Fishing Company which is one of New Zealand’s oldest companies. We learned about the way in which they keep their business and the fishing industry safe and sustainable. I was very impressed with this company because they were very transparent about what they were doing, what they lacked/ struggled with, and they made sure to have evidence to back up their claims. The speakers today seemed very passionate about what they do and voiced how they were very proud of what Sandord Fishing has accomplished and what they were doing.
My favorite thing that I learned today was how the company actively looks for young scientists that won’t be afraid to tell the company that what they are doing is wrong. I also really love how they do their own research to make sure that the areas they work in aren’t doing any harm to the wild environment. For example, the ways in which they ensure they do not harm or bother endangered dolphins was very heartwarming to hear. Overall, meeting with this company was very refreshing. I respect how proactive the company is in making sure that they remain sustainable and that their practices are safe for all involved.
