Today we went to Sanford and Sons and talked to Dr. Peter Longdill, the GM of sustainability. We learned about fish farming, fishing, processing, packaging, and fish auction that Sanford Works with. One of the questions I had was about the packaging. I was surprised to learn how some of the packaging they used, such as polystyrene packaging and plastics were the most sustainable option even though they were still environmentally damaging products. I was also interested in learning about how Sanford engages with the community by giving fish heads to the Maori community and Investing in research for fish stocks, and scholarships for Maori interested in the sustainability of the fishing industry. After learning about the fishing done by Sanford I went to the storefronts nearby and tried locally caught muscles. overall it was a good learning experience.
