Today we took a ferry to Waiheke island where we met with the Waiheke Island Resource Trust to plant trees as well as learned about sustainable wine practices. It was very cool to see how much progress this non profit had made on turning farmland into full forests. Their goal was to plant 10,000 trees a year. My favorite part of the day was the winery. It was interesting to hear how much of a learning curve comes with creating an organically certified business. I thought it was inspiring how much the vineyard persisted with their practices and learning, even though it was tedious work. Both of the businesses that we met with today are creating great models for how to actually achieve sustainability. This seems very promising for the future to have more and more businesses implement sustainability. From their it will only continue to get easier, because the knowledge is already available and becoming widespread.
