Ferry: We took a ferry from Auckland City to Waiheke Island. On the way we got to see a lot of the smaller island that surround the mainland. This includes seeing all of the lush greenery of the islands.
Wetlands/Sustainability Center: We had the opportunity to plant shrubbery in the wetlands of Waiheke today. Our guide informed us that the area we were in used to be farm land. The Sustainability Center had been in the process of revitalizing the area for the past 30 years. The center is a great place for the many tourists of Waiheke to learn how to be sustainable and to be aware of the impact of their travels.
Mudbrick Vineyard: The horticulturist at mudbrick spoke to us about the learning process for finding a new way to grow grapes sustainably. I also found it interesting they it can be a little difficult to grow crops on the island because of the inclement weather. We then had lunch at mudbrick which was delicious. We were introduced to the manager of sustainability for the wine sector. He spoke about how implementing codes throughout the wine industry enforces the vineyards to make attempts to be sustainable.
