Today we did a bunch of cool stuff in Waiheke island. First we planted native trees to help restore the forest that was lost due to farmland. For those of you that didn’t notice the sign, look at what the forest we were in used to look like. I can’t believe the difference! It’s great to see these efforts really paying off.

I was curious about about native wildlife reintroduction as well as replanting of native plants. Our guide said that once the pest problem was under control, then they would introduce more native animals as well. This is something to look forward to in the future.
We also attended the Mudbrick Winery, which had the best white wine I’ve ever had! I liked to hear about their recent shift to organic. It was good to know that they had struggles with not using herbicides, but are still committed to being organic. The owner was also describing that every bit of food gets reused somehow, mostly compost. This is also great news, as food waste that fills landfills is a burden on the environment when it could so easily be beneficial for the soil. After a long, fun day at Waiheke Island, I will unwind at a comedy show right next to the hotel.
