Today we went to Waiheke Island, planted trees, visited the Mudbrick Winery, and went on a short tour of the island. The day started out a little rainy but ended up clearing up during the beautiful fairy ride to Waiheke Island. Once we got to the island, we planted manuka trees to help revitalize the wetlands of Waiheke. After that, we went to the Mudbrick Winery where we learned about the sustainability shift that Mudbrikck Winery is undertaking and their efforts to become organic. We were also treated to a wine tasting and lunch at Mudbrick, where we were able to try White, Rose, and Red wine. Chardonnay was my favorite. we learned how the weather, soil conditions, and temperature all play key roles in the taste of the wine and how certain years produce different qualities of wine. After viewing the Viniard, we enjoyed a delicious meal. After the meal, we learned about the history of the island and how sustainable vineyards have popped up, and how Waiheke Island has become a globally recognized tourist destination.
