Today we visited Sky City Hotel in Auckland where we got to meet Anthony, their sustainability manager. One of the things I liked most about this trip was seeing that even large corporations with a focus on entertainment can have a big role in sustainability. Caring about the environment is not just a small hippie mindset, but a mindset that even big for profit corporations can and should have. I was impressed that the hotel managed to achieve carbon emission reduction goals even sooner than anticipated, and instead of patting themselves on the back and taking it easy for their accomplishment, they revised their goals to push carbon emissions down even further. I liked that Anthony emphasized taking small steps towards creating greener hotels. Smaller steps are a great way to get those less enthusiastic about sustainability onboard. Finally, it was cool to see Anthony speaking in Maori and introducing us to some of this culture’s values.
